Every so often an idea comes along that changes the trajectory of the world. And idea that shifts the way that we live our lives. It alters the fabric of our society.
We’re in the early stages of one of those ideas right now. An idea that unfortunately has popped into my own head before. Something I’ve romanticized over in previous years.
It’s a simple premise really. What if we could watch the biggest sporting events or live television events at a movie theater?
A premier viewing experience for these events that millions of people are locking into from their living rooms or bars. The super bowl or big time, appointment television (think Game of Thrones) on the silver screen. How sweet would that be?
Theater Sports Network does exactly that… kind of. Specializing in college football, TSN provides movie theaters with packages to air live games.
So here I am. In the midst of the best movie year since 2019 trying to find times to see Saltburn* and what do I see? “Coming Soon: College Football”. Damn… they stole my idea that I’ve never verbalized to anyone in anyway.
The IPIC dine-in theater here in Atlanta is showing all the New Year’s 6 bowl games including the National Championship game. Tickets are a bit higher than I expected at $30. Depending on the time, a movie ticket at the same theater is $17-21.
Despite the steep price, some of the games are selling seats, especially the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl semifinals. I’m sure the package from TSN is costing the theater a pretty penny. You gotta assume that if they fill about 30-40% of seats and sell some food and beer they’ll make their money back.
Depending on the matchup I may give the national championship game a shot at the theater. If I do, I’ll report back. Some real investigative journalism for my loyal subscribers.
